Kentucky State Fair 2010

I haven't been to the fair in a long time. I'm assuming it has to do with the fact that the excitement of fair food goes out the window when you are a vegetarian. That leaves the artwork and the livestock as my next two favorite things, neither of which is reason alone to pay for parking and mingle with the best that Kentucky has to offer. However, thanks to my mother, I was able to go for free this year.

We started with the photography and art exhibits. Some were profound while others were weird and a bit unnerving. For example, the top right picture above is of a dog fight. The small dog on the left resembles Maki and the other looks eerily like Ricky. Creepy painting Maki is biting Ricky's leg, the same leg that was broken in the dog fight that we had earlier this year! Coincidence? Probably, but I like to think that someone took inspiration from our dog fights and is expressing themselves through mediocre paintings. The picture below that was even more crazy. It was created by a CHILD! It consists of what appeared to be a styrofoam head with knives and forks sticking out of one side, shrubbery coming out of the other, a random gluestick, and bloody looking scars. Who's kid made this? If my child brought me this and told me they wanted to enter it into the fair they would get a slap and would not be able to leave their room until they made something more acceptable and not so serial killerish.

We then made our way to the livestock. I really do enjoy the cute little lambs and the big fat pigs. The cows are just cows, but I have to admit they have a special place in my heart. Who doesn't have the urge to pet a cow, with their long lashes and big brown eyes? On the other hand I did not have the urge to pet the giant bull that appeared to be carved out of marble. Weird myostatin gene mutation makes me uncomfortable.

The rest of the day was spent people watching. We spent a large chunk of time wondering why large women wear small shirts. We have no idea. All in all, a good day.

Wild and Woolly Night

When Brent and I are looking for an interesting and cheap date night we head to Wild and Woolly Video. Not only is it a mile from our house but the selection and prices are the best in town. Last night we grabbed a couple of documentaries, probably our favorite genre.

Documentary number 1: The Dungeon Masters
A documentary about people who's lives revolve around Dungeons and Dragons. I highly recommend this movie and was very pleased by how enthralling it was. To each his own, but some of the people in this film were hard to watch at times. It amazes me that these people have created an entire other reality. I am sure that this is only a certain portion of the Dungeon and Dragon population, but sheesh. So, if you have a hankering to watch socially awkward people fall into role playing to ignore their mundane lives please grab this movie.

Documentary number 2: Mine
I have not watched this one yet because Brent has no interest in watching it. I, however, am intrigued. Mine is a documentary about the pets who became lost in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the struggle of their owners trying to find them as they are spread across the country. From what it sounds like it is a story of true companionship and human relationships with man's best friend. Brent seems to think it will make me cry and "sounds like a horrible thing to watch". I am hoping that it will be inspiring. I plan on diving into this one tomorrow while Brent is out of town training.

Brent and I also had a theater extravaganza this weekend, seeing two movies in 2 days! We are out of control! Went to see Scott Pilgram, which I HIGHLY recommend. I know most of you don't like Michael Cera because he plays the same character all of the time, but it really is a great movie. Just accept the fact that Michael Cera is Michael Cera and you may actually enjoy this one. We also saw The Switch starring Jason Bateman and Jennifer Aniston. When I first left the theater I thought "that movie was cute." Then, I actually thought about it and realized "Jason Bateman was cute". The movie was so so, but if you like Jason Bateman then grab this one when it comes out on DVD. His wardrobe in this movie is great, button ups and that scruffy hair for a good 2 hours. Sigh :)

The End. Or is it?

The end is near! Soon it will be all over! I really can't believe it.

No, I'm not talking about the end times. I am talking about being done with school. As of October 20th, 2010 I will be done writing papers, partaking in discussions, and finding references. I will be free from the clutches of college after years worth of hard work. I still have quite a bit of work to do as these last classes come to a close, however, I can feel the pressure lifting from my poor exhausted brain. The era of cramming things into my brain that I actually like is nigh!

Things I want to do with my free time:

Cook
Read
Travel
Drink good beer and spend time with my dogs

And blog.

I have decided, after much debate, to start a blog. Something that I can partake in that will encourage creative writing, a favorite past time of mine. I find myself having trouble being myself in my writing since starting business school and am hopeful that I can break out of that. I will write on daily happenings, trips, and the ongoings of the life that I lead. I will try to be consistent, especially once school is officially over.

Here's to blogging! Here's to a new chapter. And here's to writing something worth reading.
